JAPAN THE NEW CC DOMINATOR IN AFRICA / ASIA ZONE.
by Med Samraoui
The 5th Zonal championship was concluded in Spring 2005 with K. Sakai´s
consecration . Two month later his countryman S. Hayakawa imitated him ,
winning the 6th edition. This competition is not finished (12 games are still
in progress) but nobody can contest the Japanese triumph.
Back to the 5th Afro-Asian championship.
It was a man-o-man between both strong players of Japan namely K. Sakai
and S. Ohtake . The decision was made when K. Sakai won his game
against Dinand Knol the new Zonal Director.
The SIM N. Ernazarov was too peaceful drawing almost all his games
and finished unbeaten at place 4th, overstepped by S. Kim .
All 4 top players did not lose any game , but this final was an horror for
D. Dempster from Australia who only saved a half point . It the same for
Dinand Knol who was representative of Africa after K. Hichem´s
withdrawal.
Dinand did not repeat his performance like the ICCF Jubilee tournament
when he won impressively his section and achieving the SIM title.
The winner of the 5th Afro-Asian championship confirmed his excellent
results with his team Chess Mail in the ICCF Champions League and with
NAPZ in the interzonal 2004. I am sure K. Sakai will be soon a future ICCF
GM , he is always well prepared theoretically and plays the endgames with
accuracy .
Japan has the potential with him , S. Ohtake, S. Hayakawa , H. Onoda,&
to play an interesting role in the XVII ICCF Olympiad , and why not to
hope for a qualification in the Final stage as it was realized some years ago
by Qatar.

6th Afro-Asian Championship Final
This Final was surely one of the strongest Final ever played in the
Africa/Asia championship. A special mention to Arif Kucukali,
who was excellent in his function as Tournament Director.Again only one player
from Africa in this final, this time I. Smuts of RSA tried unsuccessfully to do
better than his countryman Dinand Knol.
With only 12 games remaining , the winner is already known .
S. Hayakawa will succeed to K. Sakai. The zonal crown will stay in Japan !
With an impressive score of 10 points/12 , the winner has written his glorious
page in this competition, because the opposition was strong and there are
many candidates for the title at the start.
Tolga Goze from Turkey with 8 points/11 will accede to the podium .
The fight is still open for the places of honour between Paulo Sunao (Japan),
the family Odeev (father and son)of Turkmenistan , the winner of the
4th Afro-Asian championship Ali Dikmen of Turkey , Aydin Satici (TUR)
